Horsemanship Classes

Get the full Miracle Ranch experience by enrolling in our Horsemanship Instruction Electives! Choose from Western Riding, Trail Rides, or Arena Games, or do all three to grow your skills! Riders need to wear long pants and sturdy shoes with a closed toe and heel. *Weight limit of 200 lbs. Pre-registration required. One hour per day.

Western: If you've been to a rodeo or watched old Western Films (John Wayne anyone?), you've seen Western riding. Working in our very own arena, Miracle Ranch wranglers teach campers the basics of safety, equitation (how to sit balanced on a horse) and control. Campers learn to walk, jog and lope their horses. Yeehaw!

Trail Ride: Everybody loves Trail Rides! Our most popular horsemanship option takes campers through the wooded trails of Miracle Ranch as they learn about trail safety and how to maneuver their horses through obstacles. Riders use a Western saddle and usually trot by the end of the week.

Arena Games: Let's take it up a notch! Arena games takes the rider one step beyond the traditional Western classes.  Campers improve their riding skills using a variety of games played on horseback in our very own rodeo arena.  This is the perfect opportunity to refine skills while having fun!

Company Description:  CRISTA Camps dates back to the summer of 1960, when a series of "miracles" made possible the purchase of 70 forested acres on Horseshoe Lake. That property became Miracle Ranch, a western style camp in Port Orchard, Washington. By 1966, Miracle Ranch was serving over 600 campers each summer. Fast forward eight years to 1974, and Miracle Ranch busily served over 1,200 overnight campers, 90 day campers, and 1,045 weekend campers – it had become THE place to be each summer!

Camping at Island Lake began in 1945, but joined the CRISTA Camps family nearly 30 years later in 1974. Island Lake's focus has been and continues to be creating an environment committed to challenging campers to grow spiritually and to build relationships with friends, counselors, and their Creator in a beautiful, outdoor, adventure-filled environment.
